and the Home Page Contributor Service

Information Technology offers a service that makes the updating of your departmental/organizational home page seamless, automatic, and easy to use. This service allows you to deposit your departmental home page files onto the UNHINFO Web server directly using FTP.

Getting Started

To start the procedure of becoming a home page contributor simply apply online.

All applications require authorization from either a dean, director, or department head before an account can be created. In the case of officially recognized student organizations, authorization must come from a Student Affairs administrator, typically the director of Student Organization Services (SOS) or the director of Campus Recreation (in the case of sport clubs). If more than one person in your department/organization will be contributing information to the home page area, an additional application(s) will be required.

Logging into the UNHINFO servers
To log into the UNHINFO servers, connect to "" using secure FTP (SFTP). See how to use FTP for more information.

Usernames and passwords
UNHINFO staff will issue you a user name and a password when your request to use the home page service is received. After your home page area has been created on UNHINFO, you will be notified of your user name and password. You will use this user name and password when you connect to the UNHINFO server.

For reasons of security and accountability, UNHINFO home page contributor accounts are set up for individual users, not for groups of users within departments. If more than one person in your department needs access to the home page service, please follow the procedures listed under "How do I start the procedure to become a home page contributor?" to have an additional user account created. You should never give out the password to your account.

Resetting or changing your password
Because your account will be restricted to using FTP only, you will have to send a request to UNHINFO Help to have your password reset. Include in your e-mail message

  • your username
  • your e-mail address
  • your phone number
  • your department/organization

To reset your password you may use a secure online form available for this purpose. (NOTE: you must know your current password in order to be able to reset it)

Disk quota
You will be given 20 MB of disk space when your home page area is created. If the need arises for more disk space, send e-mail to UNHINFO Help with your request, along with justification for the request.

Home page directories/URLs
Your home page directory area and URL will be created on the UNHINFO server when your FTP Contributor account is created. When you deposit information in your home directory using the home page service, a link connects the information deposited in this directory forming your URL or address.

The link that is created to your home page area is "symbolic"--and as such it becomes possible to assign a more meaningful URL to your home page. For example, the URL for the College of Liberal Arts is: 

Unless otherwise requested, your address will be assigned based on either your full department/organization name or recognized acronym as shown above.

Requirements for Home Page Contributors

Following are several procedures that should be adhered to when preparing information to be submitted to UNHINFO. To request an exception to these procedures, send e-mail to UNHINFO Help with your request, along with justification for the request.

Acceptable file types and extensions
In order for your files to be "viewable" on the WWW, file types MUST be identifiable to the server. Currently, the UNHINFO server supports many file types--the two most common being text (ASCII) and Image (BINARY).

Basic home page files (.html) can be created with a simple text editor, a word processor (but saved as plain text with line breaks), or any number specialized editing tools. Image and sound files can be created and/or edited with a variety of applications on multiple computer platforms (Mac, PC, Unix) and are always BINARY files. Not only does the UNHINFO server require acceptable file types, but standard naming conventions are also required.

Your main home page file must be called "index.html". Using this file name is the accepted convention for most Web server software including the Apache software in use on UNHINFO. Using "index.html" also allows you to drop the trailing file reference in your URL if you prefer. For example, the UNHINFO server will display your home page using either of the following addresses:

which can be helpful when publishing your home page address in some form of printed material. For more examples and tips on creating HTML documents refer to this HTML Authoring document.

Name your files with care
UNHINFO is served up on a Unix platform. Unix is case-sensitive, so it is very important that the case of local file names listed in .html files match the case name of the file in the directory in which it lives. For instance, if your file index.html references a file called "link.html," then a file called "link.html" (not Link.html or link.HTML) should reside in your directory area. If the file is called "Link.html" rather than "link.html," the UNHINFO server software will not be able to serve it up. Be consistent by naming all of your local files in either all upper-case or all lower-case letters.

   TIP: Use short filenames to avoid typographical errors!

Debug your files
You should always test and debug your .html files before transferring them to the UNHINFO server. This ensures that links work before making them "live" to the rest of the world. You can test your .html files in two different ways. If you use a Web browser such as Netscape, you can test the .html files right on your own desktop workstation. Do this by going into Netscape and clicking on the following options:

   File --> 
      Open File --> 
         Type in file name or "Browse" to file location --> 
            Click OK 

This will bring up the file locally, right on your desktop workstation. Test each link within the file. If something doesn't work or connect properly, edit the file until it does.

Backup your files
Although your files will be backed up on UNHINFO during a series of regular backups that take place on the system, it is important that you keep your own backup copy of your files as well. This is important in the event that you update a file on UNHINFO, and then you decide that you would prefer to restore the file to its original version. UNHINFO staff will not do this for you.

Your UNHINFO home page area should not be used as a staging area for development and testing. UNHINFO staff reserves the right to periodically scan your home page area to remove files that are not directly referenced by your HTML files.

Special Features/Additions to Home Pages

The currently recommended method for tracking site statistics is through the use of Google Analytics. Site administrators can either acquire their own account and manage their own site statisitics, or request a summary report be maintained by Web Solutions. Interactive Forms
HTML forms are used to gather information from Web users visiting your pages. There is a basic e-mail handling script available which will take the information submitted on an HTML form and e-mail it to the address of choice. Please refer to the Creating a Form document for details on how to utilize this e-mail handling script.

CGI Scripts
The UNHINFO server is considered a "live" production server containing information used by the UNH community on a daily basis. Because of the possible security risks CGI scripts may contain, Information Technology (IT) will not allow the placement and/or execution of such scripts on the UNHINFO server except for those used to offer the basic services mentioned above.
